Info

The site was originally occupied by two three-story wooden Quaker rooming houses, The Chalfonte House and The Haddon House. The Chalfonte House was built in 1868 by Elisha and Elizabeth Roberts, who purchased land at North Carolina Avenue and Pacific Avenue from John DaCosta for $6,500. Constructed over the winter for $21,000, the hotel accommodated 140 guests and was named after Chalfont St Giles, a town in Buckinghamshire where William Penn is buried. The Chalfonte House was expanded and relocated oceanward twice, in 1879 and 1889.

Across the street, the Haddon House was opened in 1869 by Samuel and Susanna Hunt, named after the Quaker family that founded Haddonfield, New Jersey. It was sold to Leeds & Lippincott in 1890, and in 1896, they rebuilt it at a cost of $200,000, renaming it Haddon Hall.

In 1900, Henry Leeds purchased The Chalfonte House and constructed a modern hotel, the Chalfonte Hotel. This eight-story, $1 million brick building was Atlantic City’s first skyscraper, designed by architect Addison Hutton. It opened on July 2, 1904.
