Originally named the Can Can Casino Resort and Spa, the project received site approval from the Mississippi Gaming Commission in February 2010, but development was delayed due to the Great Recession. Revised plans under the name Scarlet Pearl were approved in December 2013, with groundbreaking taking place in July 2014. The resort opened on December 9, 2015, at a cost of $290 million.

On October 1, 2019, the Scarlet Pearl’s sportsbook accepted one of the largest bets in sports-betting history when Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale wagered $3.5 million on the Houston Astros to win the 2019 World Series. Over the course of October 2019, McIngvale placed a total of $6.2 million in bets at the Scarlet Pearl, all on the Astros to win the championship.
