Info
Originally announced in July 1998 as the Sundance, the project faced a copyright issue with the Sundance Film Festival and was renamed Suncoast in February 1999. The resort was developed by Michael Gaughan’s Coast Resorts, which later became part of Boyd Gaming in 2004. Construction began in July 1999, and the project faced a minor setback in September when a 32-foot concrete slab on the second floor collapsed, causing injuries to seven workers.
The 10-story hotel tower was topped off on March 22, 2000, and by June, the resort began hiring staff, with many applicants coming from the soon-to-close Desert Inn. Initially set to open on September 1, 2000, the opening was pushed back to September 12 due to construction delays and inspections. The hotel launched with 203 finished rooms, while the remaining half of the tower was left incomplete but designed for future expansion. Due to high demand, an $11 million expansion was completed in 2001 to finish the remaining hotel rooms. The final project cost was $185 million.
